The following comments consist of two parts:
1.The implications of teleonomy and natural selection in biological sciences
2.The relationship between science and the philosophy of science

Book Summary: In Search of Mechanisms: Discoveries Across the Life Sciences

作者資訊
Lindley Darden:
Professor, Department of Philosophy, University of Maryland, College Park

Biologists seek to discover mechanisms. Molecular biologists discovered the basic mechanisms of DNA replication and protein synthesis, and they continue to elucidate the myriad mechanisms of gene regulation. Neuroscientists study the mechanisms of spatial memory, the propagation of action potentials, and the opening and closing of ion channels in the neuronal membrane. Medical researchers probe the genetic basis of cystic fibrosis and how nutrient deficiencies give rise to somatic symptoms.

Deflationary Metaphysics: Response to Commentaries

First of all, let me observe how very generous and flattering this format is. In their commentaries on my paper, five impressive philosophers have developed perspectives on the issues I raise, and placed them within larger and sometimes very original philosophical frameworks. Each one of their views is rich in and of itself, and deserves more development than their short commentaries allowed. I am really pleased to have participated in this forum.

In this paper, we provide a reconstruction and elaboration of Sismondo’s constructivist view on experimental truths. Some unusual features of the view are revealed.

Deflationism without Truth

作者資訊
Min OuYang
Department of Philosophy, National Chung Cheng University

Sismondo proposes that deflationary pluralism about truth offers the possibility fora more comprehensive philosophy of science. I disagree. I hold that we either need to abandon deflationary approaches of philosophy of science or need to have deflationism without the conception of truth.

Pluralism and The Scientific Realism/ Antirealism Debate

Few, if any, would deny that in order to understand what science is it is necessary to understand why and how scientists construct theories, conduct experiments, exchange their discoveries, and engage in dispute with each other. Indeed, it seems to be an established consensus among science studiers of our days that ignorance of scientific practice would in no way lead to an adequate understanding of science.

Deflationary Metaphysics

作者資訊
Sergio Sismondo

Over the past few decades, philosophy of science has developed a family of scientific realisms based on a roughly deflationary picture of truth. These are global but weak versions of scientific realism, versions that recognize the place of conventions, goals, and contingencies in scientific representations, while maintaining that those representations are typically true in a clear and literal sense.
