Demonstration, Persuasion and Rumor: Medical Missions to Nineteenth-Century China

This paper examines the controversies aroused by western medical missionaries in China. The missionaries utilized surgical proceedings with dramatic effects to facilitate the conversion of the Chinese. However, the emphasis on the miraculous aspects of western surgery had its danger. Many Chinese identified the missionary medics as witch doctors. The Chinese anti-missionary propaganda repeatedly claimed that the missionaries gouged out the eyes of the Chinese for their practice of alchemy, and took away the organs of the natives to produced magic pills and opium.

Assaying Opium: Local Taste, Technoscientific Practice and the Opium Monopoly in Early Colonial Taiwan

This article is a historical account of the production of opium and its monopoly in early colonial Taiwan. It analyses how the Japanese colonial government successfully turned the “opium problem” in Taiwan into a well-controlled substance on the island and details the mechanisms that led it to be a profitable monopoly business. Taking a material-oriented and STS approach, this research focuses on the practical details of the production of opium pastes.

The BCG Vaccination Program in Taiwan during the 1950s and 1960s

This paper examines the use of BCG vaccination in Taiwan during the 1950s and 1960s. It is taken as an example to explain how tuberculosis prevention in Taiwan was connected to the international standard. The vaccination project was based on the WHO standard and performed as a small scale trial in certain regions of Taiwan. An appropriate method for the Taiwan was decided upon before advocating the vaccination for the whole population. This paper attempts to discuss global vaccination through the following aspects: 1.

This study aims to explore the criterion of observation in modern psychiatric practice and its basis. The research methods include field observation and qualitative interviews. The data are analysed mainly through a phenomenological approach.
